  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and optional sugar until well combined.
  3. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture until crumbly.
  4. Pour in the cold buttermilk and mix gently with a fork until the dough just comes together.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and pat into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Fold the dough over itself 2-3 times.
  6. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out biscuits and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown on top.
  8. Brush the tops with melted butter right after you take them out of the oven.
